In the year 1881, a small group of tennis players in New York City started the USTA. However, during the inception, those people gave the name – ‘United States National Lawn Tennis Association’ (USNLTA). Over the years, the words ‘national’ and ‘lawn’ were dropped from the name in 1920 and 1975 respectively. What Does UTSA Do? As mentioned before, it is a non-profit organization with over 700,000 members. It invests all the money it earns to develop and promote the game of tennis across the United States. It manages the game in the US from the grass-roots levels to professional levels. The organization was founded to create and standardize the rules and regulations of the game throughout the US. USTA organizes and holds some of the most popular tournaments in the US including the US Open, Cincinnati Masters, USTA Pro Circuit – men’s and women’s tournaments, Boy’s Junior National Tennis Championship (under 16 and under 18), New Haven Open At Yale (ceased to exist in 2019), and US Men’s Clay Court Championships. Based on the different locations, the USTA has 17 different geographical locations and sections with over 700,000 members collectively. Moreover, it has over 7,000 organizational and professional staff to organize the events and manage the organization. NTRP Ratings By USTA Like every governing body has, even the USTA has its own guidelines of rating the members and players based on their skill levels. As a player, you will get an NTRP rating based on how much they excel in the sport. A beginner will have a score of 1.5, and it can go up to 7.0 before he is given the title of a ‘world-class player’. The ratings are published at the end of each year on the official website of the USTA and players use it as a reference point to stay in the competition and out-do their competitors.
