After a long day of work, sleep is the part of our day that relieves us from stress and hopefully gives us a much-needed boost for the following day. Other people, however, experience strange things when they are asleep such that they cannot experience deep sleep. Some of these people have terrifying sleep disorders which cause them fitful night rests. Here are 5 strange and frightening sleep disorders you can experience. Kleine-Levin Syndrome Although it is usually recommended to catch up on sleep, especially if you have been working late hours for a few nights in a row, sometimes it’s just not that simple. It is good every now and then to get an extra hour of sleep. But sometimes it can get extreme, such as in cases of people sleeping up to twenty hours a day. People who have Kleine-Levin Syndrome suffer from this. Young boys are more likely to experience this problem, sometimes to the extent that they sleep so deeply it is difficult to wake them up. They tend to have abnormal behavior such as binge eating, heightened sex drive, apathy, hallucinations, and compulsive behaviors. It is a serious infection and treatment is needed to control this problem. Sleep Paralysis Sleep paralysis occurs when a person is in the process of waking up or going to sleep. This disorder causes the body and mouth to be temporarily paralyzed, such that the victim can neither move or talk. It is not necessarily harmful but is very frightening to the person. This condition usually passes quickly, within one to two minutes but it is still enough to make it harder to go to sleep for fear of experiencing it. REM Sleep Behavior Disorder In this disorder, the body is active such that the sleeper can act out the dreams while he or she is having them. It is a serious disorder where the sleeper potentially shouts, punches, and kicks during their dreams. Thrashing out and jumping out of bed are also common symptoms. This disorder should be treated as early as possible so the sleeper does not injure themselves or their loved ones. There have also been correlations found between victims of REM sleep behavior disorder and other neurological disorders and Parkinson’s disease. Exploding Head Syndrome This disorder can cause hallucinations to patients. When they are trying to fall asleep they report hearing loud sounds such a slamming doors or gunshots accompanied by flashing lights. These people are usually afraid of falling asleep and restless. Fatal Familial Insomnia You may think the lack of sleep is normal, but it is not normal when this problem persists for months. Sleep is essential for your health, and continuous lack of sleep is dangerous, as it can lead to sometimes fatal outcomes. Fatal Familial Insomnia is a disorder in which the sufferers lack sleep on a consistent basis due to a strange working of the nervous system. This disorder generates high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, and excessive sweating. There are also reports of patients having trouble walking, along with hallucinations and sudden weight loss. This is a serious problem as there are only a few symptoms which can be medicated, and the disorder itself is untreatable. Thus, it is wise to accumulate knowledge in this area as these disorders can affect anyone. Do everything in your power to get a good nights rest, your mind and body will thank you for it.
